“Funk Soul Cookers” was formed in 2003 by local food lovers Ben Conque and Adrien Canter at a New Year’s Eve party. But why Funk Soul Cookers? Well while listening to the radio in 2003 the song “Funk Soul Brother” by Fat Boy Slim started to play and Bam! Adrian and Ben started singing the song while turning spoons. So you guessed it right… this is how “Funk Soul Cookers” was born. Sense then, the two locals have cooked for numerous charity events. Even though they do not always compete sometimes they actually win! They placed third at the Lyons Club in Youngsville, LA. They also places two weeks ago in the Gumbo category sponsored by Acadiana Mazda. This Wednesday they are competing at the “Realtors Gumbo Cook Off” Ben currently works for Assurance Financial and the two will be under this name when you go out looking for them! The two have previously won first place the last three years and will be trying for four in a row this year. They say they have also won people’s choice awards in various cooking shows locally as well.
When asked why cook they said… “We love cooking for family and friends or large groups. We both have children, and we like teaching our kids the fundamentals of Cajun cooking… We also like sharing and learning cooking techniques and recipes with other Backyard Chefs. All people have one thing in common we have to eat! So why not do it with your family or friends good cooking will always bring a smile to someone’s face or spark a conversation about your moms or dads or grandmothers rice n gravy etc… Bottom line we love to cook from BBQ to Cracklins and everything In between.”
The two said they always appreciate anyone who will take the time to support our local charities and functions with spreading love from our spoons! The two are clearly very passionate about cooking and bringing smiles to people’s faces.

Teams will costume themselves and decorate their booths with this year’s theme: “Lights, Camera, Gumbo!” Come and take a stroll through some of your favorite Hollywood blockbusters while being served some of the best gumbo in Louisiana. Dozens of REALTOR® and Affiliate member teams will compete for top honors. They will serve a wide variety of gumbo dishes in an “all you can eat” style.
